ash wednesday

remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. repent, and believe the gospel.

our church did a lent fair for families. it is a time when you can come, bring your small children and learn about lent & the imposition of ashes. the kids did crafts & our children's minister jo stegald taught the children about the ash cross that is on your forehead. i love jo, not only for who she is but the importance she has in our children's lives. she is so special to us.

this was taken right before bath time.

saturday, february 21st matt & i renewed our vows. it was the most special, intimate service. the Holy Spirit moved in us & we saw the love of Christ through everyone who made this day so memorable. we are humbled at the love & joy that so many people shared with us on this unforgettable occasion. the bible states that agape is a sacrificial, unending love...we saw this love in the face of kenny & wanda, dan & suzanne, our small group family, the letter that welled with pride from my parents & everyone else who congratulated us. it was amazing to write our own vows from deep within & share them in candlelight alone. we served each other communion & made a covenant again with our Lord & each other that we would keep one another for the rest of our lives.

our vows:
my vows to matt-
"Fear not, for I have redeemed you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you…For I am the Lord, your God, your savior.” Isaiah 43:1-3
When you love someone, you do not love them all the time, in exactly the same way, from moment to moment. We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life, of love, of relationships. We leap at the flow of the tide and resist in terror its ebb. We are afraid it will never return. We insist on permanency, on duration, on continuity; when the only continuity possible, in life as in love, is in growth, change & in fluidity. The only real security is not in owning or possessing, not in demanding or expecting. Security in a relationship lies neither in looking back to what was in nostalgia, nor forward to what it might be in anticipation, but living in the present relationship and accepting it as it is now. Relationships must be like the ocean, one must accept it , for what it is here and now, within our limits - we are like islands, surrounded and interrupted by the sea, and continually visited and abandoned by the tides. But the same ocean that brushes your shore will brush mine. You will have ebb & flow just like me. There will be storms at sea but we will weather them together, side by side. Our tides may never be the same but constant they are.
We are like the ocean tide, may our love always be as constant and unchanging as the never-ending waves that pour beneath our feet, flowing endlessly from the depths of the sea;your love came softly upon my heart, just as the tide comes softly upon the sand, and just as there will never be a morning without the ocean's flow,so there will never be a day without my love for you. I pledge myself to you this day. Our love will be as unchanging and dependable as the tide;as these waters nourish the earth and sustain life, may my constant devotion nourish and sustain you until the end of time.
I, Elizabeth, keep you, Matt, as my one & only love for the rest of our lives. I pledge to honor, encourage, and support you through our walk together. When our way becomes difficult, I promise to stand by you and uplift you, so that through our union we can accomplish more than we could alone. I vow to honor & respect you, to be patient & obedient. I promise to work at our love and always make you a priority in my life. I love you more today than yesterday but not as much as tomorrow. This is my solemn vow. “I always will.”

matt's vows-
"place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. it burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. many waters can not quench love; rivers can not wash it away." song of songs 8: 6-7
elizabeth, it was 10 years ago when we first pledged our commitment to one another, but it seems like just yesterday that i was standing across from you, my beautiful bride, looking into your eyes, holding your hand and making a promise to you before God, family & friends. this promise was a lifelong commitment. we have been through so much in life together; laughter and tears, joy & sorrow; and through it all, i can say that i have loved you through it. i do admit that many times over these 10 years i have not shown you my love in the example that husbands have; that being as Christ loved the church. but, this time marks a new beginning. today, i want to renew those vows to you and again pledge my love & life to you; this time not as two young college students, rather now as a man who with 100% certainty renews my promise as your faithful husband. i promise to be there for you in sickness & health, in middle & old age, in good & bad hair days. i will always think you are perfect...perfect for me. i am here to be your supporter, your confidant, and your best friend. i vow to stand beside you always making you the priority in my life. for the greatest of all i have will be my love for you. i have certainly been blessed richly over the past 10 years and i am thrilled that i get to spend the rest of life with you. elizabeth, i love you!
